I'm playing around with an idea for an 'enhanced' emulator that includes ROM hacking as a core feature. In particular I'm envisioning a multi-ROM experience kind of like NES Remix or Wario Ware, but it doesn't need to be limited to that. I'm also interested in ROM hacks that are specific to particular games (level editors, sprite editors, translation patches, etc).
Technical aside: One of the major downsides of ROM hacking is that you have to modify the original ROM with your changes. This can take quite a bit of skill and arcane knowledge to pull off. However, it's not actually necessary if you only care about the end result. Instead of changing the ROM itself, we can have the emulator watch the game state and make the necessary changes as it's running. In essence, memory hacking to produce the same result as ROM hacking. With the right interface, we could make ROM hacking accessible to anyone.

I love playing ROM hacks and seeing the creativity that goes into them. However, I have no experience actually making them so please fill me in on what's important to the community.
